Maren Domke

Hoof-and-horse-marenMaren Domke was born in Hamburg, Germany, and started riding at the age of eight.  As a youngster Maren could not afford her own horse, so rode for other owners in dressage, jumping and eventing. She trained with Hans Melzer, who now is German national coach for eventing, head trainer and manager of the Luhmuehlen Equestrian Centre where the European Championships '99 for eventing took place.  She was educated in the German system of classical riding and passed her German National Dressage Federation instructor's exam at the age of 18. Maren went on to train riders and young horses. In New Zealand Maren was head trainer at the Rangeview Equestrian Centre in South Canterbury where the Trakhener stallion Falkensee stood.  Maren returned to Germany to work for 18 months for Dr Uwe Schulten-Baumer, who at that time was the mentor and trainer of Isabel Werth.
Maren has lived in New Zealand since 1999 and is a New Zealand resident. In 2005 she completed a 3year diploma in holistic animal therapies at the Holistic Animal Centre, Tauranga. She then carried on to studying at Massey University where she graduated in 2008 with Bachelor of Applied Science, majoring in Equine Science. At Massey she was awarded with the Massey Equine Student of the Year title both 2007 and 2008.

Maren started trimming in 2004 when she bought her first horse in New Zealand and decided to go without shoes. Though she started off with a more invasive method she soon realised that this only harmed her mare and changed to a style taught by the likes of Pete Ramey. A thirst for knowledge and a desire to improve her trimming had her attending many clinics of visiting experts like Cindi ‘Hawk” Sullivan. Soon many inquiries of friends do please trim their horses resulted in a part-time job. She puts great emphasis in her continuing education regarding the hoof and the natural management of the horse.
In 2006 Maren was part of a group of dedicated barefoot trimmers that started HOOFNZ www.hoofnz.org.nz an organisation dedicated to the barefoot horse and the training of future trimmers.
After graduating in November 2008 Maren decided to continue with her growing business of holistic hoof and horse care in the Manawatu since then has expanded her area as far as Wanganui, towards the Hawkes Bay, and Kapiti Coast.
